Link Wall - Madeleine Thornton-Smith presents "URBAN ENVIRONMENTS"

THIS WEEK AT LINK WALL:

Madeleine Thornton-Smith presents

URBAN ENVIRONMENTS
16th-19th April

In this exhibition Madeleine is attempting to explore the tension between the natural world and urban 'environments'. Where do humans belong? Is is 'natural' that humans exert control over nature, playing God by creating gardens and destroying the natural environment, only to create their own urban 'ecosystems' of sorts in cities? Through the use of collage, fineliner and felt-tip pen drawings, and paint, she has created a series of works with the aim of examining these questions.

OPENING
TUESDAY 16th APRIL
5pm-7pm

Monday, 8 April 2013

ELENA HALKAS - Runt Space Exhibition

THIS WEEK AT RUNT SPACE:
Elena Halkas presents
"Fragments"
Opening Tuesday 9th April
5pm-7pm

Elena Halkas ‘Fragments’ exhibition

In this series of works, 1st year Fine Arts student Elena Halkas explores the theme of the evolution of technology in the 21st century, examining the idea of connection and communication using technological devices.

In her first artwork, a drawing with blue felt-tip pen and fineliner on paper,  Elena looked at the negative effects of technology on society. The blue colour scheme of the connecting triangles symbolises, as Elena writes in her artwork description, "a
unified body of water that connects suburbs and individuals
together". A mobile phone can be subtlety seen among the triangular forms, which are purposefully placed apart in order to emphasise the separation Elena feels excessive technological use has brought to society.

The composition of these shapes incorporate
several bus stop routes, indicative of another way people connect and communicate.

In Elena's second work, an eye-catching installation that spreads across two walls made of MDF wood, gesso and spray paint, Elena attempted to illustrate both the positive and negative effects of technological communication on contemporary society. In this work, the triangles are representative of individuals and groups in society that are all connected in some shape or form.

ISABELLA KOTTEK - this week at Link Wall

THIS WEEK AT LINK WALL:
Tuesday 9th April
Opening 5pm-7pm

ISABELLA KOTTEK
"SUM AH PROFILEZ"

Isabella has constructed some amazing drawings in the Link Space wall, using nothing but black tape! From a distance, it appears the drawings could have been done in black calligraphy marker, or even ink. The viewer realises, however, upon approaching the images that they are constructed entirely out of tape, demonstrating playful experimentation with line and challenging traditional drawing techniques.
Isabella's illustrative profiles are reminiscent of Egon Schiele's paintings of the figure, distorted and individual in a style not unlike that of the German Expressionists. Isabella based her works on drawings she did in pen on paper, which can be found underneath the major images.
